Why it matters
Publishers increasingly want control over how much of a page search engines quote, in classic snippets and in AI answers. Google documents a set of controls for this: nosnippet, max-snippet, max-image-preview, max-video-preview and the data-nosnippet attribute, and says nosnippet and max-snippet also govern how much content can be used directly as input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. They combine in ways that are easy to get wrong, and data-nosnippet is ignored on most elements.
This tester reads every directive on the page and in the headers, for each crawler, applies the most restrictive as Google does, and shows the page text with what can't be quoted struck through. It sticks to what Google and Bing document; it makes no claims about other engines or AI crawlers. When you've decided what you want, the planner writes the tag.

By the numbers
Show the numbers as a table
| Measure | Characters |
|---|---|
| Visible text on the sample page | 241 |
| Inside data-nosnippet | 93 |
| Text Google may quote | 148 |
| Longest single snippet (max-snippet) | 120 |
How to use it
- Paste the page HTML and headers, or fetch a live page.
- Read the highlighted text: struck-through text won't be quoted by Google.
- Check the directive table and conflicts.
- Use the planner to write the tag you want, and test again.
FAQ
Does nosnippet keep my content out of AI Overviews?
Google's documentation says nosnippet prevents the content being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and max-snippet limits how much can be. It doesn't remove the page from search.
Why isn't my data-nosnippet working?
Google only honours it on span, div and section elements. On a p or li it's ignored. The tester flags those.
What's the difference between max-snippet:0 and nosnippet?
None for text: Google treats max-snippet:0 as nosnippet. -1 means no limit.
Does it apply to ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Their crawlers aren't covered by these documented controls. Use robots.txt to control them; the robots.txt Tester and PingAI help with that.
