About the PingAI checker

If you've seen PingAI/1.0 in your logs, someone asked PingAI to check whether AI crawlers can reach your site. It isn't a crawler: it only runs when a person asks for a check.

What it fetches

One check makes about 12 requests to your site, at most once an hour per site: /robots.txt, your homepage once as a normal browser and once with the user agent of each of 8 crawlers (to test firewall rules), your sitemap and /llms.txt. It never follows links, submits forms or fetches anything else.

How to recognise it

Every request includes PingAI/1.0 (+https://leej.uk/pingai/bot) in the user agent, including the ones that borrow a crawler's name for the firewall test. Requests come from Cloudflare's network.

How to opt out

Add this to your robots.txt. PingAI reads robots.txt first, and if it's told to stay out it stops there: no homepage, sitemap or llms.txt requests, and no report is made.

Privacy

PingAI sets no cookies. It doesn't store the IP address of the person who asked for a check: it keeps a one-way hash for rate limiting, which is cleared after 48 hours. Reports are deleted after 90 days.
